Jennifer and Christopher Lapine, Lawrence, announce the birth of a daughter, Ellis Katherine Lapine, born Feb. 5, 2001, at the Overland Park Regional Medical Center.

Julie and Lee Embrey, Lawrence, announce the birth of a daughter, Elizabeth Erin, born Feb. 8, 2001, at the St. Joseph Health Center in Kansas City, Mo.

She has a sister, Olivia, 4, and a brother, Christian, 22 months.

Maternal grandparents are Bill and Wanda Wood, Shell Knob, Mo. Paternal grandparents are Orville and Judy Embrey, Republic, Mo. Great-grandmother is Myrtle Franklin, Neosho, Mo.

Thomas and Candace Willis, Eudora, announce the birth of their son, Samuel Patrick Willis, born Jan. 10, 2001, at Overland Park Regional Medical Center.

Grandparents are Patrick and Candy Willis, Eudora, and James Harris and Sharron Harris, both of Eudora.

Great-grandparents are Ruth Yother and Beverly Willis, both of Eudora.

Jaclyn Polk, Lawrence, owns one bull listed in the 2001 Spring Sire Evaluation Report published by the American Angus Assn. which is headquartered in St. Joseph, Mo. Tom and Kim Swearngin, Lawrence, also have a bull listed in the report.

Issued in both the spring and fall, the new report features the latest performance information available on 4,916 sires.

A standard flower show entitled "Under the Big Top" was held in conjunction with the Lawrence Garden and Home Show Feb. 23-25 at the Douglas County 4-H Fairgrounds. The flower show was sponsored by the Designer's Guild, Green Thumb Garden Club, Lawrence Flower Club, Meadowlark Garden Club and Prairie Acres Garden Club, all of Lawrence. These clubs are associated with the Kansas Associated Garden Clubs and the National Council of State Garden Clubs. Also sponsoring the show was the Lawrence African Violet Club which is associated with the African Violet Society of America.

Blue-ribbon winners in design were: Evelyn Lenzen, Mary Lynn Stuart, Dottie Daugherty, Donna Lantry, Kit Carlsen, Karen Booker, Mildred Kratt, and Ginny Beene.

Winners of special awards in the design category were: Kit Carlsen, Designers Choice award; Donna Lantry, Table Artistry award; Ginny Beene, Award of Distinction, and Mildred Kratt, the Petite award and Design Sweepstakes awards.

Blue-ribbon winners in horticulture were: Marrillie Good, Joan Reiber, Karen Booker, Carol Ahlert, Walter Murphy, Della Hadley, Ginny Beene, Ann Phillips and Beulah Duncan.

Winners of special awards in the horticulture division were: Karen Booker, Award of Merit No. 1, Award of Horticultural Excellence and Horticulture Sweepstakes awards; and Della Hadley, Award of Merit No. 2.

There were 87 design entries and 57 horticulture entries in the show.

Heather Suffron and Tania Valverde, both of Lawrence, were named to the honor roll at the University of Indianapolis in Indianapolis.

Matthew Cravens and Katherine Marden, both of Lawrence, were named to the dean's honor roll at Tufts University, by earning at least a 3.4 grade point average.

The Lawrence High School Class of 1961 is planning its 40-year reunion which will be July 27 and 28.

The planning committee is trying to locate the following classmates: Donna Fisher, Ardis Harmon Connor, Sheila Harris Kelsey, Diane Hastings Buchanan, Sandra Hayes Royster, Carolyn Kauffman Haller, Harry Marshall, Kathryn Mumford, Richard Nehrbass, Julie Samson Armstrong, Sue Whitson Howell, Beverly Wiggins Knackstedt, John Haberbosch, James N. Smith, Donna Hunzicker McCue and Margaret Garcia.

Coila Hegeman, a former resident of Lawrence, will celebrate her 85th birthday on March 12 with a card shower.

Hegeman was a school teacher for 45 years. After retirement, she and her husband, Kenneth, moved to the Clinton area. She moved to Lawrence in 1990.

She now resides at Brookside Manor, Overbrook, KS 66524 where cards may be sent to her.
