Tar Heels take ACC’s top seed

— Joseph Forte scored 27 points and Matt Doherty became the first coach to win or share an ACC regular-season title in his first season as No. 4 North Carolina beat North Carolina, 76-63, Wednesday night.

The Tar Heels (23-4, 13-2) captured the No. 1 seed in next week's ACC tournament in Atlanta with the win, shooting 57 percent to rebound from a 20-point loss to No. 7 Virginia over the weekend.

Duke could tie North Carolina in the league standings with a victory at the Smith Center on Sunday, but North Carolina would win the tie-breaker because of its season sweep of Maryland.

Forte had 19 points in the second half, while Ronald Curry added a career-high 14 as the Tar Heels have now won or shared 23 ACC regular-season crowns in the league's 48 years.

No. 6 Florida 72, Vanderbilt 62

Nashville, Tenn. Brett Nelson scored 24 points and Matt Bonner added 15 as No. 6 Florida held off Vanderbilt.

No. 7 Virginia 84, Clemson 65

Charlottesville, Va. Donald Hand had 15 points, eight assists and four steals in his final home game, and No. 7 Virginia overcame bad shooting to beat Clemson for its fourth straight victory. Virginia (20-6, 9-6 Atlantic Coast Conference) made only 30 of 72 shots.

No. 11 Boston College 67, St. John's 62

Boston Troy Bell scored 17 of his 20 points in the second half, going 5-of-6 from the free-throw line over the final two minutes, and No. 11 Boston College celebrated its Big East division championship with a victory over St. John's.

LSU 78, No. 14 Mississippi 77, OT

Baton Rouge, La. Collis Temple III scored five points in overtime and rebounded Mississippi's desperation shot at the buzzer to give LSU a victory.

No. 15 Kentucky 90, Auburn 78

Lexington, Ky. Freshman Jason Parker scored a career-high 19 points to lead five players in double figures and No. 15 Kentucky beat Auburn to clinch a share of its 41st Southeastern Conference championship.

Arkansas 66, No. 20 Alabama 63

Tuscaloosa, Ala. Joe Johnson scored 17 points and Arkansas forced 28 turnovers to rally for a victory over No. 20 Alabama.

No. 21 Georgetown 74, Rutgers 58

Washington Ruben Boumtje Boumtje scored 15 points, and Kevin Braswell passed Sleepy Floyd as Georgetown's career steals leader.
