Armstrong poised to win

June 28, 2001

— Lance Armstrong looked unbeatable in the Tour de Suisse on Wednesday, easily preserving his commanding lead with one day of racing left.

The Tour de France champion finished 36th with the pack but recorded the same time as the winner. Germany's Erik Zabel won the next-to-last leg, his second stage victory of the race through Switzerland.

Armstrong, the star of the U.S. Postal Service, is using the Swiss race as a tuneup for the Tour de France, where he has won the last two years. The Texan took the lead in Tuesday's mountain time trial and lost no time Wednesday. He leads with a total time of 31 hours, 52 seconds. The race ends today with a 110-mile loop in Lausanne.
