John Vogel obituary

Mr. Vogel died Tuesday, June 19, 2001, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

He was born May 14, 1916, in Stuttgart, the son of John H. and Margaret (Veeh) Vogel. He attended school in Phillips County, and taught in a country school there for a year. He graduated from Kansas University School of Business in 1939.

Mr. Vogel was a stockman and farmer in Douglas County. He was elected to the Kansas House of Representatives in 1962 and served 18 years in the House. He was chairman of the House Agriculture and Livestock Committee for 14 years and a member of the Ways and Means Committee for 12 years. He retired from the House of Representatives in 1980.

He was an original director of Douglas County Bank and had served as interim president in the early 1980s. He was a member of the Lawrence Chamber of Commerce and a board member of Independence Inc. He received distinguished service awards from Kansas University, Kansas State University, Kansas Veterinary Medical Assn., Lawrence Kiwanis Club, Lawrence Sertoma Club, Lawrence Association of Life Underwriters and Kansas Audio-Reader Network. He received the chamber of commerce's "Citizen of the Years Award" and KU's Ellsworth Medallion for "unique and significant service" to the university. He also was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and Kansas University Alumni Association.

He married Irene Schaake on April 9, 1939, in Lawrence. She died on May 20, 1995.

Survivors include a son, Gerald M., Lawrence; a daughter, Nancy S. Vogel, Lawrence and Hays; a brother, Edwin, Topeka; four sisters, Edna Veeh, Sun Lakes, Ariz., Lula Evans, Topeka, Leona Tannahill, Lee's Summit, Mo., and Margaret Martin, Fullerton, Calif.

The family will greet friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at Warren-McElwain Mortuary.

The family suggests memorials to Douglas County Visiting Nurses Assn., Trinity Lutheran Church or Good Samaritan Fund at Lawrence Presbyterian Manor, and they may be sent in care of Warren-McElwain Mortuary.
