6-19 Driver hits pedestrian during storm

June 20, 2001

A 35-year-old man crossing Sixth Street was struck by a car late Tuesday.

Just after 10 p.m., Rodney G. Blevins crossed Sixth Street about 200 feet east of Arkansas Street, near the entrance of Ray's Liquor, Lawrence Police Lt. Steve Zarnowiec said. Blevins was not in a crosswalk.

A passenger in the car, Lawrence resident Bria Alden, 20, and Blevins were taken to Lawrence Memorial Hospital. They were being treated late Tuesday night but their conditions were unavailable.

Police were investigating the cause of the accident.

"The roadways were wet; it was misting," Zarnowiec said. "I'm sure the wet roadways with lights as well as the pedestrian crossing not in a crosswalk were a factor, not necessarily a cause, but certainly a consideration in our investigation."

Authorities had not released the name of the driver late Tuesday.
