Elizabeth and Paul Morgenroth Jr., Topeka, announce the birth of a son, William Edward, born May 28, 2001, at Overland Park Regional Medical Center. Grandparents are Martha and Gary Skeet, Lawrence.

Lance and Gretchen Herron, Lawrence, announce the birth of a son, Braeden Cooper, born June 7, 2001, at Shawnee Mission Medical Center. Braeden has one sister, Jensen, 3.

Maternal grandparents are John and Jackie Ayler, Eudora. Paternal grandmother is Vicki Maykulsky, Lawrence. Maternal great-grandparents are Ab and Treavha Hall, Eudora; and Richard and Dorothy Ayler, Garden City, Mo. Paternal great-grandparents are A.J. and Lois Herron, Wichita.

Julie and Gary Miles, Lawrence, announce the birth of a son, Garrison Fiske, born May 31, 2001, at Overland Park Regional Medical Center.

Ruthie and Bryan Dolezal, Lohrville, Iowa, and formerly of Lawrence, announce the birth of a son, Derrick Edward, born May 22, 2001, at Stewart Memorial Community Hospital in Lake City, Iowa.

He has a brother, Andrew. Grandparents are Betsie and Gary Brown, Churdan, Iowa; and Beverly and Loren Dolezal, Lawrence. Great-grandmother is Marcella Dolezal, Belleville.

Ted Alsop, Lawrence High School junior, was selected to participate in the Kansas State University College of Engineering Science and Summer Institute May 28 through June 1.

The purpose of the institute was to offer high school students the opportunity to learn about engineering, as well as physics, chemistry, biology and math. Students designed a balsa structure in a team environment and tested the strength using engineering laboratory equipment.

Douglas Jackson, Lawrence, and Christy Zimmer, Tecumseh, earned associate degrees May 12 from Colby Community College.

Jamie Erin Combs, Overbrook, was named to the Missouri Western State College Dean's Honor Roll for the spring 2001 semester by earning at least a 3.5 grade point average.

Susie Warden, Lawrence, has been selected to attend Concordia Language Villages, a program of Concordia College, Moorhead, Minn., which introduces youths ages 7 to 18 to 12 world languages and cultures: Chinese, Danish, English, Finnish, French, German, Japanese, Korean, Norwegian, Russian, Spanish and Swedish.

Susie is the daughter of Susan Warden and John Staples, Lawrence.

Megan Blair, Lawrence, was among the students named to the 2001 spring semester Dean's List at the University of Northern Iowa, Cedar Falls, by earning at least a 3.5 grade point average.

Rebekah Gilmore, Lawrence, received a bachelor's degree in music on May 20 from Luther College, Decorah, Iowa. She is the daughter of Charles and Marcia Gilmore, Lawrence.

Tim Bradley, Lawrence, performed with the St. Olaf Orchestra of St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minn., as part of the college's commencement-reunion weekend.

Bradley, a music major at St. Olaf who plays horn, is the son of Gerald and Patricia Bradley, Lawrence.

Mariana Zylstra, a 1999 Free State High School graduate, was one of three students chosen to participate in the undergraduate mentoring program in environmental biology at Arizona State University.

Participation in the program began during the spring 2001 semester. This summer she will be in Kalamazoo, Mich., and Brookings, S.D., completing the study.

Sarah Zylstra, a 1997 Lawrence High School graduate, graduated from the University of Southern California on May 11. She completed her studies in English with an emphasis in American literature and a minor in gender studies.

She resides in Los Angeles, where she is employed with Burke Williams, Santa Monica, Calif. She is the daughter of Jon and Kate Zylstra, and Monica and David Dillon.

Catherine Baldwin, Baldwin, has been named to the Bucknell University Dean's List for the spring 2001 semester by earning at least a 3.5 grade point average. Bucknell University is in Lewisburg, Pa.

Dottie Daugherty, Lawrence, was recognized by Kansas State University for her work as a classified employee. She retired last year.

She worked as an office professional for the Douglas County Extension office in Lawrence for 11 years. She was honored with a gift certificate at the 24th annual classified employee recognition ceremony May 24 in Manhattan.

Miriam Hillmer, Lawrence, was named to the Augustana College Dean's List for the 2001 spring semester by earning at least a 3.5 grade point average. Augustana College is in Sioux Fall, S.D.

Colin Robins, son of Drs. C. and Catherine Robins, Lawrence, was honored at the 2001 Macalester College Honors Convocation May 18.

Robins received the Henry Leap Award, which is given to a student who has made a commitment to academic excellence in geology. He also received the Virginia McKnight Binger Prize, which was awarded to a student who shows exceptional proficiency in modern languages and literature.

He was elected to Phi Beta Kappa, which recognizes his outstanding scholarship in the liberal arts and sciences, and Sigma Delta Pi, a national Hispanic honor society.

Robins is a Lawrence High School graduate. MacAlester College is in St. Paul, Minn.

The Old West Lawrence Neighborhood Assn. Applause Committee has recognized five gardens as part of its ongoing program to honor neighbors for their aesthetic contributions to the OWL neighborhood.

These gardens are at 801 1/2 Maine, 645 Ill., 746 Ind., 847 Ind. and 743 La.

Anna McElwain, Lawrence, and Dena Putnam, Perry, recently completed their degree requirements at Texas Christian University, Fort Worth. McElwain received a bachelor's degree in accounting. Putnam received a bachelor's degree in nursing.
