Kansas University pitcher Pete Smart has been named to the second team of the Academic All-America college baseball team.

Smart, a left-hander who has signed a free-agent contract with the Milwaukee Brewers, was one of three Big 12 players chosen to the three teams.

The other two are Nebraska's John Cole (first team) and Jeff Leise (second team).

A second-team All-Big 12 Conference selection, Smart posted a 9-4 record and a 3.20 earned run average for the Jayhawks this spring.

He was named KU's male scholar-athlete of the year in May.

Smart signed a free-agent deal with the Milwaukee Brewers last month.
