The Girls State program strives to convince its participants of the importance of being involved in their government.
It's always an honor to welcome the young women of Girls State to Lawrence.
The program sponsored by the Kansas American Legion Auxiliary opened Sunday at Kansas University. Its goal is to teach the 550 high school seniors-to-be something about the government of their state and nation.
Much has changed since the program was founded in 1939. One of the negative changes has been a sharp decline in Americans' participation in their government, even as active voters. Hopefully, the participants in the 2001 Girls State program will gain a new appreciation of why that participation is so vital to our democratic way of life.
This week also is a wonderful opportunity to show off the KU campus to some of the state's top high school students. We hope they will carry home a good impression of KU and consider coming back to Lawrence to continue their education after graduation.
Again, welcome to Lawrence. We hope your week at Girls State will be a worthwhile and enjoyable experience.
