Big 12 leaders pass academic measure

June 6, 2001

— Big 12 Conference directors on Tuesday approved a proposal to require athletes to have passing grades in at least six hours of classes in the preceding semester to be eligible for postseason play.

The conference commissioner also received the go-ahead from the chief executive officers to carry the Dr Pepper Big 12 Football Championship through the duration of the league's television contract with ABC Sports at the conclusion of the 2007 regular season.

"In the next 30-60 days we will launch proposals and hope to take some action on future sites when the directors of athletics meet in September," Commissioner Kevin Weiberg said.

The 2001 Dr Pepper Big 12 Football Championship is scheduled for Dec.1 at Texas Stadium in Irving.
