Wait until late summer before applying herbicides and fertilizers to the lawn. Herbicides can injure grass when temperatures are above 85 degrees, says the Maryland Home & Garden Information Center.

Fertilizing also can burn grass and is not recommended during the heat and stress of summer, when cool-season turf varieties may go dormant.
