Late surge lifts Sting past Mystics

— Tammy Sutton-Brown's layup with 6.5 seconds left capped a 14-0 run as the Charlotte Sting beat the Washington Mystics, 62-60, Thursday.

The Mystics, who led 60-48 with 6:26 remaining, had a chance to tie, but Annie Burgess' runner in the lane at the buzzer bounced off the left side of the rim.

Brown finished with 11 points and nine rebounds. Andrea Stinson scored 15 and Dawn Staley had 10 points and six steals as Charlotte (11-13) moved one game ahead of idle Orlando in the battle for the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.

Starzz 71, Liberty 63

Salt Lake City Natalie Williams scored 17 points as Utah beat New York, extending the Liberty's losing streak to a season-high four games. Jennifer Azzi added 14 points and Adrienne Goodson had 13 points and eight rebounds for the Starzz.

Mercury 63, Shock 62

Phoenix Jennifer Gillom hit a runner in the lane with 19 seconds to play, and Phoenix held on to defeat Detroit.
