LYONS Four young people from Lyons were killed early Wednesday when a car crashed into a tree on the west edge of the city and burst into flames.
The victims were identified as Lance Selvage, 23, the driver, and his three passengers, Carlos Renteria, 21, Adrian Fitzgerald, 17, and Jake Farner, 18.
Lyons Police Chief Dennis Luck said in a statement that the car already was burning when an officer arrived at the scene shortly after 1 a.m.
Luck said the car apparently was traveling at a high speed on a gravel road when the driver lost control and the car skidded sideways into a slight ditch. Luck said the driver appeared to have been able to straighten the vehicle out just before it crashed into a large pine tree.
"It appears as if the car burst into flames upon impact, and both the car and tree were on fire," the statement said. Lyons firefighters extinguished the flames, but the four victims were dead at the scene.
A crisis control counseling service was being set up at Lyons High School.
It was the second Kansas traffic accident in less than a week to claim four lives. A crash early Saturday near Osawatomie in Miami County killed a 20-year-old driver and three 14-year-old passengers.
Lyons is about 60 miles northwest of Wichita.
