Drowsy Duval strikes out

British Open champ skunked in Telus Skins Game

July 24, 2001

— British Open champion David Duval failed to win a hole Monday at the Telus Skins Game, while Vijay Singh collected $58,257 with a 6-foot putt.

Mike Weir, a Canadian, made a 6-foot putt worth $29,129, and Sergio Garcia won one hole to earn $9,710.

They played nine holes at the Angus Glen Golf club, with another nine holes scheduled for today.

Duval slept for just one hour after taking a 712-hour flight from England following his three-stroke victory at Royal Lytham & St. Annes in the British Open. He earned $858,000 for his first major title.

"Today is a tough day," said Duval, fighting another yawn after his round. "What happened yesterday is starting to sink in."
