Hemphill always cool in pool

Heat no problem for Aquahawk

July 16, 2001

As the heat and humidity built up inside the Lawrence Indoor Aquatic Center late Sunday afternoon, several fans, coaches and swimmers wearily reaffirmed how hot it was.

Lawrence Aquahawks' swimmer Andrea Hemphill wasn't one of them, though. In fact, nothing seemed to bother the 17-year-old Lawrence High student.

The Second heat of the boys 15-over division dives into the pool
prior to their race. The event took place during the Roger Hill
Invitational swim meet Sunday at the Lawrence Indoor Aquatic
Center.

The Second heat of the boys 15-over division dives into the pool prior to their race. The event took place during the Roger Hill Invitational swim meet Sunday at the Lawrence Indoor Aquatic Center.

Even as she dove into the pool for her last race of the Roger Hill Invitational swim meet the 100 freestyle Hemphill was as determined as ever.

"You have to have that attitude every time you jump in the pool," said Hemphill, who is being recruited by several Div.-I schools, such as Illinois, Notre Dame and Penn State.

Such an attitude paid off for Hemphill all weekend long as she won all six of her races and provided plenty of inspiration for her teammates.

"There are times when I think that if I slacked off a second or two, that it wouldn't really matter," said Hemphill, who won the 100 freestyle in 1:01.43. "But I know that I would only be cheating myself. I try to remember how much fun it will be when I'm finished and I know that I've given everything I have."

Hemphill's attitude provides the perfect example of the kind of mindset Aquahawks' coach Brian Barnes tries to have his swimmers emulate.

"She likes to win," Barnes said. "She's simply hard to beat. You're going to have to work extremely hard to beat her."

That's why Barnes thinks Hemphill will be an asset to whatever school she chooses.

"The reason she is a Division I swimmer is because she works hard," Barnes said. "She's doing her best 100 percent of the time. She's the example."

But Hemphill quickly deflected such praise about herself and noted the success all the Aquahawks have enjoyed this weekend.

"We're all doing real well," said Hemphill, who plans to swim again this season for Lawrence High after taking last season off to train exclusively with the Aquahawks which she felt helped her recruiting status.

"It's pretty much our only home meet, so this gives us a chance to show people what we're about. Also we're preparing for sectionals and that has us very excited."

Barnes agreed with Hemphill and said that the meet, which was being held inside for the very first time at the brand new aquatic center went exceptionally well.

"Honestly, they're exceeding my expectations," Barnes said. "For this meet, that's really exciting."

Hemphill is one of 12 Aquahawks who will be heading to Oklahoma City on July 25-28 to take part in the Region 8 Section Championships. If they perform well there, then they could qualify for the senior nationals in August in California.

Other Aquahawk swimmers going to sectionals include 13-year-old Ashley Robinson; 14-year-olds Ashley Jackson, Melissa Little and Julie Szabo; 17-year-olds Amanda Morford, Megan Morford, Kelli Criswell, Kelly Meyer and Jonathan Schmidt; 19-year-old Rachel Sellon; and 20-year-old Casey Morford.

Hemphill insists that despite the tediousness of thousands of practice laps she usually practices six days a week swimming hasn't gotten boring. She says she uses the time to improve her mental mindset for racing.

"There's lots of diversity in the drills that we practice," said Hemphill, who raced in the 100 freestyle, 100 butterfly, 200 and 400 individual medleys and the 50 and 200 freestyles this weekend.

"Plus I try to envision where I should be at and how fast I should be there."

Since first joining the Aquahawks as an 8-year-old, Hemphill says she still enjoys swimming as much as ever.

"When you're younger, swimming is really fun because of the social aspect," Hemphill said. "When you get older, it gets more and more difficult to improve your times and you have to work harder and harder.

"But it's still fun and I love it."
