Peru: Fujimori's extradition sought
A prosecutor asked Peru's supreme court on Saturday to request former President Alberto Fujimori's extradition from Japan and to sentence him to two years in prison for allegedly abandoning his duties.
Peru has repeatedly called on Japan where Fujimori took refuge after leaving office last year to turn over the former president but has not formally requested his extradition. A supreme court extradition request would be the first.
Prosecutor Nicanor de la Fuente petitioned the court to declare Fujimori "an absent criminal" and to seek his arrest on charges of "dereliction of duty and abandonment of office," a statement from the prosecutor's office said.
