For garden excitement, plant in containers

July 15, 2001

Apartment dwellers and others needn't feel out of the gardening loop. With a few containers, people with limited space can garden as enthusiastically as those with sunny suburban yards.

Try these tips to create terrific-looking container gardens:

Set pots on bricks. This provides better drainage and discourages slugs.

Be sure your container has a bunch of drainage holes. You can drill additional ones in plastic pots.

Work a slow-release, granular fertilizer into the soil every spring or when you repot. Use a liquid fertilizer weekly.

Water containers every day in the summer. If it's really hot, plants might need a second drink in the evening.
