Mrs. Coombs died Monday, July 2, 2001, in Salt Lake City.
She was born Jan. 30, 1909, in Auxvasse, Mo., the daughter of Frank Chalmers and Edna Moore (Barkley) Stokes. She lived in Lawrence from 1941 to 1956. She worked at the Bureau of Visual Instruction at Kansas University. She was a member of the Ladies Literary League and the University Club, both of Lawrence. She later lived in Arlington, Va.; Brigham City, Utah; Juneau, Alaska; Topeka; and Salt Lake City.
She married L. Madison Coombs on June 1, 1932, in Fulton, Mo. He died in 1990.
Survivors include two sons, Fred S. Coombs, Urbana, Ill., and F. Alan Combs, Salt Lake City; six grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
The family suggests memorials to a charity of the donor's choice.
