Several local businesses here had been victimized by a "professional safecracker" who had found ways to punch, penetrate and open safes in certain venues. Losses had not been determined.
On July 11, 1901, the Lawrence World, in the light of the intense spell of heat, observed: "It takes a good man to be good natured these discouraging days and yet it is the thing to do. Anybody can be mean and disagreeable but it takes a strong charactered man to live through these trying times without losing the sweetness of his temper. Most men have lost it long ago but those who have not and get through this summer ought to have monuments erected to them."
