— Lawrence scored three runs in the top of the eighth inning and hung on for a 9-8 victory over Shawnee No. 327 to salvage a split of an American Legion baseball doubleheader Sunday at Mid-America Complex. The Raiders dropped the first game, 10-9.

Matt Berner, Troy Wingert and Derek Bailey delivered RBI hits in the decisive eighth inning. Eric Peterson, who relieved starter Kyle Unruh in the sixth, was the winning pitcher. Peterson is now 9-1.

"Although we split and the other team scored runs, I was really pleased and felt good about what we did," Raiders coach Carl Brooks said.

The Raiders, now 21-13, turned four double plays in the twinbill and didn't commit an error in the second game. A sparkling defensive play by Unruh from third base in the bottom of the eighth inning prevented a run.

"He made a diving stop and from the seat of his pants threw out the runner at home," Brooks said. "It was unbelievable play."

Wingert (3-for-4, two RBIs), Dallas Worley (2-for-3, two RBIs) and Rob Scott (2-for-4, RBI) led Lawrence's offense in the first game.

In the second game, Berner (3-for-5, RBI), Blake Dickson (2-for-4, two RBIs) and Josh Swenson (2-for-4, RBI) sparked Lawrence.

The Raiders will play Tuesday at KC Post 83.
