Two pedestrians struck by vehicles within minutes of each other in downtown Lawrence Friday night escaped with minor injuries.
Katy Nitcher, 46, Lawrence, was struck and knocked to the ground about 7:40 p.m. by a green Dodge Ram pickup while walking north across Seventh Street at New Hampshire Street with her husband, Sgt. Paul Fellers of the Lawrence Police Department said.
The light was green and the "walk" sign was illuminated when the couple entered the intersection, Fellers said. The truck's driver, Joseph Hickock, 72, Lawrence, turned left when the light turned green and braked when he saw the Nitchers. Police issued him a citation.
About four minutes later, Leonard Begay Jr., 22, Lawrence, was struck by a car while crossing New Hampshire at 11th Street. The vehicle, which a friend who was with Begay described as a blue 1991 Plymouth, left the scene. It was last seen heading north on New Hampshire. Police had a tag number but had not contacted the driver Saturday.
Nitcher and Begay both were transported to Lawrence Memorial Hospital, where they were treated for minor injuries and released.
