To the editor:
I have been a resident of Douglas County for 27 years or so. I am a retired Shawnee County deputy sheriff. I retired in 1997 after serving for 24 years. Now I am on a fixed income, and money is tight for us. No one wants higher taxes, certainly not me.
There is one thing I don't mind paying higher taxes for and that is good law enforcement. Douglas County has an excellent sheriff department. I have known a lot of the deputies for many years. I have met Rick Trapp, and have been most impressed by him. This does not just happen by itself. It happens through the efforts and dedication of many. The sheriff, the deputies, and the commissioners by funding the department. I strongly support giving Sheriff Trapp the funding necessary to find, and keep, good deputies and the funding necessary to buy and maintain good equipment. (The new radio system is an example of this.)
Let's give Sheriff Trapp what he needs to protect us. Adequate funding to continue the tradition Douglas County has had for years, an excellent sheriff department.
