Old home town - 25 and 100 years ago today

July 4, 2001

IN 1976

At 1 p.m. on Sunday, July 4, Lawrence tied in with every other city in the United States, from Maine to Hawaii, as bells rang out and celebrations dominated in regard to the nation's 200th birthday, the bicentennial observance of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

Locally, one of the finest fireworks displays of all time figured in the bicentennial observances.

IN 1901

On July 4, 1901, the Lawrence World noted: "The Fourth in Lawrence was a quiet one. A fair day overhead, plenty of firecrackers, torpedoes and other explosives banging continually, made up the day and the program at South park made the celebration here complete."
