Owners: Kathy and Gary Lucas.

Number of employees: One.

Years in business: Nine.

Years in business in Lawrence area: One month.

Main services: Retailer of sleeping products, including solid-wood children's beds, bunk beds, mattress sets, adjustable beds, day beds and futons. "We always strive to make customer service No. 1," Kathy Lucas said.

Why is the Lawrence area a good place for the business? In 1992 the Lucases left the Lawrence area -- Gary Lucas had worked for Hercules in DeSoto; Kathy Lucas for KPL in Lawrence -- to open their own business in Wichita. But employees were difficult to find, prompting them to sell the place nine years later and return to the home of their family and friends. "We feel there is a need for our specialty sleep shop in Lawrence," Gary Lucas said.

What are the company's growth plans? "Expanding," Kathy Lucas said.

Where do you see the business in five years? Bigger, with three or four other Bed Mart stores in Kansas, they said.

Something you may be surprised to learn about the business: "We are originally from Lawrence," Kathy Lucas said. "We specialize in sleep."
