Denver businessman Philip Anschutz, who earned a KU business-administration degree in 1961, is taking control of two bankrupt theater chains: United Artists Theater Circuit and Regal Cinemas. The moves would make him the country's largest owner of movie theaters.

Anschutz, a native of Russell, is co-founder of Qwest Communications and is the largest individual shareholder for Union Pacific Railroad. He has donated millions of dollars to KU, and two of its buildings -- Anschutz Library and Anschutz Sports Pavilion -- bear the family name.
