Construction of the airport started in the 1950s, with a runway and taxiway built to serve as home for an overhaul base for Trans World Airlines and to relieve pressure on Kansas City's Municipal Airport.

In 1966 voters approved bonds to develop terminals and enlarge TWA's overhaul base.

Kansas City International Airport officially was dedicated Oct. 21, 1972, and became the metro area's official airport Nov. 11, 1972, when all scheduled airline operations were transferred from Municipal Airport.
