— Ottawa High's boys basketball team turned in a trademark performance Tuesday night in its 79-60 victory over Wellsville in the first round of the Baldwin Invitational.

Led by a balanced scoring attack and full-court pressure defense, the second-seeded Cyclones (7-3) broke out to a 24-11 lead after the first quarter against seventh-seeded Wellsville (2-7) at Baldwin Junior High gym.

With the victory, Ottawa advanced to a semifinal matchup with third-seeded Augusta at 6:30 p.m. Friday at the junior high.

Augusta defeated Anderson County, 67-43, on Tuesday.

"Balanced scoring is our trademark," Ottawa head coach David Grover said of his team's performance, which saw four players reach double figures in scoring. "We're comfortable with any of our top nine guys getting it done."

A total of eight Cyclones scored in the game, led by junior John Krayca's 23.

Ottawa's full-court pressure defense forced 17 first half Wellsville turnovers and a total of 25 in the game.

"The big thing is that we were able to convert turnovers into points this evening," Grover said. "We have a habit of forcing turnovers early, but have failed to convert on those opportunities lately."

"We just didn't take care of the ball," Wellsville head coach Kermit Deterding said. "We were forced into an uptempo game and turned the ball over too often."

Josh Flett scored 17 points to pace WHS. Chad Roecker chipped in 16.

Ottawa experienced greater success breaking the Eagles' pressure defense.

"They kept a lot of pressure on us, but I thought we handled it well," Grover said. "Once we broke their perimeter pressure, we got good interior looks at the basket and wide-open threes."

Santa Fe Trail 45, Jefferson West 42

Baldwin Ryan Roberts scored 10 points and Craig Bourne 10 as Santa Fe Trail beat Jefferson West in a first-round game. Brian Mott had nine rebounds and Dylan Schoonover six for SF Trail (7-2).

McLouth Invitational Perry-Lecompton 70, Highland 50

McLouth Shawn Howard and Shannon Ritchie scored 17 points apiece to help Perry-Lecompton reach the semifinals of the McLouth Invitational. Aaron Swaggerty scored 11 points for the Kaws (2-7). Perry will play Maranatha at 7:30 p.m. Friday in a semifinal.

Maranatha 49, McLouth 35

McLouth Isaac Gardner scored 17 points, including four three-pointers, in the Bulldogs' loss to Shawnee Maranatha in the first round of the McLouth Invitational. MHS (0-9) will play Highland at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
