"We finally played KU defense," Kansas senior guard Jennifer Jackson said after the Jayhawks snapped a four-game losing streak with a 78-67 victory over Kansas State on Saturday. "I don't think that's something anybody's seen from us this season. We focused on that and finally got it back today."
Whether it was a one-game fluke or a season-long revelation remains to be seen, but the Jayhawks (7-7 overall, 1-2 Big 12) can take a step toward the latter tonight when they take on Oklahoma State (8-7, 0-4).
Tipoff is 7 p.m. at Gallagher-Iba Arena.
"Everybody in our locker room is tired of losing," Jackson said, "and this (victory over K-State) was a step forward. We just need to keep taking steps forward."
OSU, along with Kansas State the only Big 12 teams without a conference victory, will present a balanced offense tonight. While none of the O-State starters averages in double figures, all five average between 7.3 and 9.5 points per game.
Kara Faulk, a 5-foot-11 junior, leads the Cowboys with 9.5 points and 7.6 rebounds per game.
Kansas leads the all-time series with OSU, 24-15, and has won eight straight and 12 of 15.
KU coach Marian Washington hopes Saturday's game was a turning point for the Jayhawks.
"We're constantly working on it, working every single to trying to figure out how to get better," she said. "We're so dependent on our junior college players. We've started challenging ourselves to be better, to take some risks and be more aggressive."
The new attitude translated to 29 turnovers forced against K-State. Oklahoma State had 20 turnovers in a 64-43 loss to Texas last Saturday.
"We were much more aggressive defensively," Washington said. "Defense has been a concern, but we need to continue to keep putting pressure on people."
The Jayhawks, 1-4 on the road this season, will travel to Colorado on Saturday, then play host to Oklahoma next Wednesday.
