Services for Delbert E. Mathia, 81, Lawrence, will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Warren-McElwain Mortuary. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.
Mr. Mathia died Friday, Jan. 5, 2001, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.
He was born March 8, 1919, in Eudora, the son of Henry and Ottie Belle (Burnell) Mathia. He grew up in Eudora and graduated from Eudora High School in 1938. He attended Allen County Community College, Iola.
Mr. Mathia served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He worked in the Douglas County Clerk's office after the war and was elected county clerk in 1954. He worked part time as a county auditor after retiring in 1980.
Mr. Mathia served on various committees and boards, including rent control board and youth baseball programs. He was a member of Central United Methodist Church, Dorsey-Liberty Post No. 14 of the American Legion, National Association of County Officials and B.P.O.E.
Mr. Mathia was active in Kansas Boys State and wrote a government manual that was used for years in the program, was a former president of County Clerks of Kansas, and was awarded a life membership in the American Legion.
He married Lois Vogler on Aug. 4, 1951, in Lawrence. She survives of the home.
Other survivors include a sister, Alberta Elrod, Prairie Village.
Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today and 9 a.m. to service time Monday at the mortuary.
The family suggests memorials in his name to the church or American Legion Building Fund, sent in care of the mortuary.
