Sometimes the best work in a community is done without a lot of fanfare.
That's why Breast Cancer Action Inc. last year established its Wellspring Award. The honor recognizes a professional and a volunteer in the field of women's health who have been sources of inspiration and compassion for Douglas County women.
Nominations are being taken through Jan. 31 for the 2001 Wellspring Awards. The recipients will be recognized at 2 p.m. April 7 at the annual Betsy Beisecker Memorial Tea, a fund-raiser for Breast Cancer Action at First Presbyterian Church, 2415 Clinton Parkway.
"It's a subjective award," said Donna Neuner, a breast cancer survivor who serves as vice chair of the Breast Cancer Action board. "The nominator tells about the person and why they should receive the award by describing the volunteer or the professional and the reasons why the award is warranted. But it also goes beyond that to the heart they've shown and their interest (in women's health)."
Nominations will be considered by a selection committee made up of Breast Cancer Action board members and members of The Bosom Buddies, a support group started four years ago by the organization. This year's recipients will receive an engraved silver pitcher.
Breast Cancer Action, a grassroots, patient-driven effort established in 1995, acts as a clearinghouse for information and support services, Neuner said. In addition to providing speakers for community forums and setting up informational tables at events, the organization has a hotline (766-8887) and provides information about the American Cancer Society's Reach to Recover services.
Neuner said this year's Betsy Beisecker Memorial Tea will feature a fashion show with breast cancer survivors as the models; a memorial to Lynne Stype, who died last fall of breast cancer; the presentation of the Wellspring Awards; door prizes; and a variety of refreshments.
Tickets for the tea, which cost $13.50, are available from Breast Cancer Action board members, Bosom Buddies members, Savannah's, 735 Mass., and at the door.
