Swing dance slated in Benedictine College

Atchison "An Evening of Swing" will be held from 8 p.m. to midnight Friday in the Ralph Nolan Gymnasium at Benedictine College, 1020 N. Second St., Atchison.

Swing dance lessons will be taught from 8 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. by Louis Barr and Laura Cantu. Door prizes and a swing dance competition are planned.

Cost is $6 a person.

Club seeking entries for writing contest

District II, Kansas Authors Club, is seeking entries for its spring contest for writers and poets. All District II members and residents of Anderson, Bourbon, Coffey, Douglas, Franklin, Johnson, Linn, Lyon, Miami, Osage and Wyandotte counties can enter.

Entries can be submitted in any or all nine categories, with no limit on the number of entries, providing the required entry fee accompanies each entry.

Entries should be submitted by March 1. Awards will be announced April 21 at the group's monthly meeting at the Lawrence Public Library, 707 Vt.

For rules, fees and categories, check with the Lawrence library or send a self-addressed, stamped envelope to Jean Jackson, contest chairperson, 447 Ohio, Lawrence, 66044.

Deadline for film festival nears

Kansas City, Mo. The deadline for films and videos in the Kansas City metro division of KC Jubilee 2001 has been extended to Jan. 20.

Residents in Jackson, Platte, Clay, Ray, Cass, Buchanan and Johnson counties in Missouri and Wyandotte, Johnson, Douglas, Leavenworth, Jefferson and Miami counties in Kansas are eligible.

Full-time students who are away at college can enter if their parents reside in those counties.

Entries can be shorts or features in the genres of narrative, animation, documentary or experimental. The divisions are open: for all ages and any format, fee is $20; 8mm, for all ages, originally shot on 8/S8mm film or 8mm video, fee is $15; student, for any full-time student in college, high school or middle school and any format, fee is $15; and underground, any age or format, fee is $15.

Applications for Met auditions due Jan. 15

Kansas City, Mo. The Metropolitan Opera National Council will hold district auditions at 9:30 a.m. Jan. 27 in White Hall at the University of Missouri-Kansas City Performing Arts Center, 4949 Cherry St.

The district competition is an opportunity for area young singers to perform before distinguished judges, audition for the Metropolitan Opera and compete with other talented young people in the district.

Those who wish to participate in the auditions must submit applications by Jan. 15. More information and applications, call (816) 942-0173.

Winners of the district competition will compete in the regional auditions at 8 p.m. March 10 in St. Louis, Mo.

The regional winner will compete in the national semi-finals March 25 at the Metropolitan Opera House in New York City. The finals concert will be April 1.

Monetary prizes in a variety of categories will be awarded at all levels of competition.
