LaQuinta, Calif. The way Harrison Frazar has played so far this year, he might soon become known for something other than being Justin Leonard's roommate at the University of Texas.
Frazar shot a 9-under 63 to take a one-stroke lead over a gaggle of other players as the 42nd Hope opened its five-day run.
Seven were tied at 64, including Cameron Beckman, who entered when defending champion Jesper Parnevik withdrew to stay home with his expectant wife. He tied for second with Mark Calcavecchia, Glen Day, Jeff Maggert, Tom Pernice, Kevin Sutherland and Stephen Ames. Frazar made nine birdies and nine pars.
Tiger Woods is not entered.
