Recreation Calendar

Lawrence Bicycle Club

Today The Muffin Ride departs at 8 a.m. from the southeast corner of the park near Colorport, 26th and Iowa, and heads to Lone Star Lake.

Sunday The Show-n-Go ride, a longer tour with varying destinations, will begin at 10:30 a.m. in South Park. Bring money for snacks along the way.

Tuesday Illuminated bicycle path ride departs at 6:30 p.m. from Southwind Twelve Theater, 3433 Iowa. Bring lights and dress in layers for warmth. Bring money for food and conversation afterward.

Lawrence Parks and Recreation

The leisure activities brochures for Lawrence Parks and Recreation are available at all city recreation centers, the Lawrence Public Library and city hall. To rent city park shelters or other city facilities, call 832-7920.

Here is a list of significant dates and activities. Many of them require pre-registration by calling 832-7912:

Today Saturday Morning Free program, 10 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., Prairie Park Nature Center. A program will be presented on nature topics.

Today Saturday Nite Main Event, 7 p.m. to 11 p.m., East Lawrence Recreation Center, 1245 E. 15th St. Students in third to sixth grades can enjoy a night of music, raffles, basketball tournaments and Karoke.

Sunday "Making Homes For Birds," 2 p.m. to 3 p.m., for ages 12 to adult. Fee: $5.

Monday "Strength Training for Women," 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. It's a four-week session. Class maximum: 12. Fee: $18.

Tuesday Wild Adventures for Preschoolers and Parents, 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Class maximum is 20. Fee is $2 per child. Also held on Wednesday.

Tuesday Nature classes for adults, 11 a.m. to noon. Class maximum: 20. Fee: $3.

Wednesday Young Naturalist Class, 4 p.m., for ages 5 to 7. Fee is $2.50 per child. Join naturalist staff to explore a new nature topic with live animals, outdoor investigations, games and hands-on activities. Pre-registration is recommended and parents must remain with group. Maximum enrollment is 15. Also held on Thursday for ages 8 to 13.

Saturday, Feb. 17 Saturday Morning Free program, 10 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., Prairie Park Nature Center. A program will be presented on nature topics.

Saturday, Feb. 17 "Rape Avoidance/Physical Attack Prevention," 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Class maximum: 20. Fee: $18.

Douglas County

Senior Services

Douglas County Senior Services, 745 Vt., has several classes taking place. All Douglas County residents age 55 and older are invited to participate. Future seniors also are welcome if space allows. Call Senior Services, 842-0543, for information or to register.

O.U.R.S. Dance, 2 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Also 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Sundays.

New Horizons Saxophone Group, 4 p.m.

Friday Pinochle and pitch, 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

New Horizons Clarinet Group, 2:45 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Bhaktivana yoga

Monday Beginner students meet at 6:30 p.m. at the Bhaktivana Yoga Center, 1204 N. 200 Road, Baldwin. Classes also meet at 6:30 p.m. Thursdays and 9 a.m. Saturdays at the center.

Tuesday Gentle yoga classes meet at 10:30 a.m. at the center. Classes also meet at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the center.

Wednesday Beginner classes meet at 6:30 p.m. at the Ecumenical Christian Ministries, 1204 Oread.

Lawrence Aquahawks Swim Team

Monday through Saturday Lawrence Aquahawks, a year-round competitive swim team for Lawrence area youths, meets for practice at the Haskell Indian Nations University pool. Practice times vary according to ability and age. Contact head coach Brian Barnes at 841-8891 for more information.

Lawrence Masters Swimming Club

Monday through Saturday All levels of ability and interest from ages 18 and up are welcome to join Lawrence Masters Swimming Club. Morning practices are on Monday-Wednesday and Friday-Saturday at the Carl Knox Natatorium at Lawrence High School, 1901 La. Evening practices are Tuesday and Thursday at Lawrence Athletic Club, 3201 Mesa Way. Contact Daniel Fisher, 841-5167, for information.

Chess club

Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday Yoga classes taught by Margaret Carr in the Iyengar tradition are held in the morning and evening on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and in the morning on Saturdays at the Yoga Center of Lawrence, No. 4, 920 Mass. Call 830-YOGA for more information.

Table tennis

Thursday The Lawrence Table Tennis Assn. meets for play and practice at 7:30 p.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church, 1245 N.H.
