Joshua Shuckahosee, Lawrence, was identified by police as the fatality. He was the driver of a 1999 Ford Ranger pickup that struck a utility pole at the intersection of Clinton Parkway and Lawrence Avenue, police Sgt. Mike Pattrick said.
A passenger, Steven Spottedtail, 17, Lawrence, was taken by Lawrence-Douglas County Fire & Medical to Lawrence Memorial Hospital, Pattrick said. He was treated and released, a hospital spokesperson said.
About 10:40 p.m. Shuckahosee was driving east on Clinton Parkway when he lost control of the pickup, Pattrick said. The pickup struck a pole on the south side of the intersection, he said.
Police are investigating the possibility that alcohol was a factor in the wreck, Pattrick said.
Shuckahosee was trapped in the vehicle and had to be extricated by rescue workers. He was then taken to LMH by Fire & Medical where he was pronounced dead.
Shuckahosee was the second Lawrence traffic fatality in less than a week. Sunday night Shyra McGee, 23, Lawrence, was killed in a two-vehicle accident at Sixth Street and Monterey Way. That accident also remains under investigation.
