On Feb.10, 1901, the Lawrence Journal noted the Iola Register comment about the character of Kansas. The Register wrote: "'After forty years,' says Victor Murdock, 'Kansas character is formed; it is a combination of New England and Kentucky.' It is easy enough to figure out New England; but where does Kentucky come in?" - Iola Register. The Journal, in light of recent exiting by Kansas men of drinking establishments when a saloon smasher showed up, commented "Well, it doesn't come in at all just now. Since the appearance of Mrs. Nation it has been busy going out, mostly through the back door."
