Three boating safety education courses have been scheduled to help area residents meet a new boating law that went into effect at the beginning of the year.
The first course, Boating Skills and Seamanship, starts today and runs from 9 a.m. to noon for four consecutive Saturdays at Gaslight Village Club House, 1900 W. 31st St.
Other classes include Boating Safety, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. March 24 in Leavenworth, and Kansas Boating Basics, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. April 28, in Ozawkie.
Completion of one of these courses includes a state certificate permitting the operation of a motorboat or sailboat in the state, and may help lower the cost of marine insurance.
The law states that any person born on or after Jan. 1, 1989, must complete an approved boater safety education course in order to operate a boat powered by motor or sail on public waters in Kansas.
