The Lawrence Duplicate Bridge Club played a qualifying round of the grand national competition. This is a team game with four players per team. It was played as a stratified Swiss Team game, and Brian Baresch served as the director.
The first-place team was Lou Ann Lee, Rick Charpie, Dave Piro and Robert Solick. The team of Julie Dalton, Lester Dalton, Gladys Kampbell and Russell LaForce placed second. The third-place team was Lois Clark, Martine Paludan, Cathy Blumenfeld and Michael Blumenfeld. Terry Tolar, Vince Russo, James Gunn and Harry Shaffer placed fourth.
Other teams winning half of their games were Eldon Herd, Glenna Herd, Bill Schutzel and Patt Radford; and Anna Icenhower, Rubye Buster, Sitaraman Sathiamoorth and Clara Elkins.
The Lawrence 99er Bridge Club's Wednesday night game was opened with a lesson presented by Eldon Herd. The game was directed by Don Brennaman.
The winning pairs were led by Frances Vogel and Dorothy Arth, followed by Mike and Rhonda Montgomery. Sara Jane Zimmerman and Graham Leuschke placed third, followed by Emily Foster and Albert Ballard. Fifth place was a three-way tie between Linda Randall and Linda Swain, Barb and Bill Hamilton, and Janet Williams and Jan Darting.
