Details were sketchy early today, but the driver of a white Ford Ranger pickup was killed and another person critically injured in the one-vehicle wreck late Thursday near the intersection of Clinton Parkway and Lawrence Avenue.
Police did not identify the driver, except to say he was a male who appeared to be in his 20s.
Officers on the scene said the pickup was headed east about 10:45 p.m. on Clinton Parkway when it went into a skid. The pickup struck a traffic light pole on the southeast corner of the intersection at Lawrence Avenue, and the impact buckled the driver's side door nearly in half. The truck then bounced into a utility pole.
It was unknown whether the second victim -- also a male, but of unknown age -- was a passenger in the pickup or a pedestrian. He was transported by Douglas County Fire & Medical to Lawrence Memorial Hospital with what were described as critical injuries.
Police had not determined what factor the rainy, slick weather played in the wreck. But there was standing water on Clinton Parkway.
The names of the accident victims were not available by press time early this morning.
Sunday night, 23-year-old Shyra McGee of Lawrence was killed after the car in which she was a passenger was struck at the intersection of Sixth Street and Monterey Way. Three other people involved in that accident, including McGee's husband, John, have been released from area hospitals.
Police continue their investigation into that accident.
