The driver of a semi tractor-trailer headed west on Interstate 70 died when his rig crossed the concrete barrier and turned over into on-coming, eastbound traffic Wednesday morning just northeast of Lawrence, authorities said.

The driver of that truck was killed when another semi tractor-trailer, heading east, collided with the overturned truck.

There was no information yet if anyone else was injured, but at least one area ambulance helicopter was called in, according to a dispatcher for the Kansas Turnpike Authority.

The accident occurred about 6:30 a.m. in the eastbound lanes between the East Lawrence terminal and the Lawrence service area, the dispatcher said.

Immediately following the accident, all eastbound traffic was backed up. Eastbound traffic was limited to the eastbound passing lane through the morning.
