Kirk Hinrich came close to his first collegiate triple-double with 15 points, eight rebounds and eight assists. He had no turnovers in 33 minutes during KU's 79-68 win over UMKC on Saturday night.

"I had some triple-doubles in high school," Hinrich, KU's junior guard from Sioux City, Iowa, said. "Really, I was focusing more on making it hard for him (Michael Watson) to get shots."

Ku's Nick Collison (4) blocks a shot by Marcus Golson.

Hinrich spent some of the time guarding UMKC guard Watson, who hit 12 of 26 shots for 29 points. Watson missed eight of 13 threes and had seven turnovers with four steals.

"I was able to get a couple of offensive rebounds," Hinrich said. "It doesn't surprise me. Sometimes I can get in there and get rebounds."

Hinrich last season against Nebraska also came close to a triple-double with 20 points, 11 assists and seven boards.

Workmanlike: The crowd Saturday night wasn't as jazzed as during Tuesday's game against Wake Forest. Ditto the Jayhawks, who weren't exactly sky high for the nonconference game.

"Our guys will not be as fired up for them (Kangaroos)," KU coach Roy Williams said. "We just played Arizona and turned around and played Wake Forest. It's human nature. You are not gonna do that so I knew it was not gonna be one of those rah-rah, jumping up and banging your head on the ceiling type stuff in the locker room.

"It was more, 'Go out and play. Use your abilities and at the end of the game hopefully the cream will rise to the top.'''

Upcoming trip: KU will play Princeton on Wednesday night in Princeton, N.J. The Jayhawks will fly to New York Tuesday and watch former Jayhawk Paul Pierce's Boston Celtics play the New York Knicks, then bus to Princeton that same night.

"Hopefully it'll be a highlight for the team," Williams said. "We'll go to the game, drive to Princeton that night then play the game the next day and charter back and get ready for final exams."

Stats, facts: Freshman Aaron Miles wore a blue headband for the first time this year to keep sweat out of his eyes. Jeff Boschee tied a season high with 19 points. He had 19 versus Arizona. UMKC's Michael Watson set an 2001-02 opponent high field goal attempts with 26.
