FSHS wrestlers take third place

December 9, 2001

— Led by three individual champions, Free State High placed third Saturday at the Gardner-Edgerton wrestling tournament.

Matt Somers (119), Justin Stevens (189) and Ian B(215) won their respective weight classes for the Firebirds.

"They all wrestled really well," FSHS coach Darrell Andrew said of his winners. "Matt Somers looks better every time he's on the mat. Ian won all his matches with pins and Justin is probably on top of our takedown board. He must have had a dozen takedowns. He looked good on his feet."

Free State, which finished with 164 points, was in the hunt for the team title until Adam Berg and Brett Shoffner were sidelined with injuries. Berg (119) sustained a concussion and Shoffner (152) cracked a rib and possibly bruised his liver, Andrew said.

Madill wins for LHS

Topeka Lawrence High 160-pounder Aaron Madill went 3-0 and placed first to lead the Lion entries at the Topeka Highland Park wrestling tournament on Saturday.

Madill defeated Manhattan's Jonathan Walter, 11-10, in the championship match. Walter placed fourth at the Class 6A state tournament last season.

"It was a good, solid match," LHS coach Jeff Tummons said. "Aaron kept his focus."

Eudora places second

Eudora Eudora High, led by Matt Linzer, James Barr, Mike Paxton and Jason Marmon, finished second at the Eudora Invitational on Saturday.

Linzer (119), Barr (160), Paxton (189) and Marmon (215) all placed second for the Cardinals, who compiled 138 points. Overland Park Aquinas won with 150 points.

SFT's Eden, Shively win

Garnett Santa Fe Trail's Travis Eden (152) and Daniel Shively (275) placed first Saturday at the Anderson County Invitational.
