Netter expands horizons to TV, Davis Cup

December 7, 2001

— Pete Sampras is making several changes after his worst season in a decade: switching coaches, planning to play Davis Cup, and signing up as an investor and spokesman for The Tennis Channel.

The 30-year-old tennis player split with Paul Annacone, his coach since 1995, and hired Tom Gullikson the twin brother of Tim Gullikson, Sampras' former coach who died of cancer at age 44 in 1996.

"I'm working with Tom Gullikson starting next year," Sampras said Thursday. "I ended my six-year relationship with Paul Annacone a number of weeks ago. We just ran our course professionally."

Sampras said Thursday he will return to the U.S. Davis Cup team next year. He figures to be busy in 2002, adding the new commitment with The Tennis Channel to his on-court schedule. The Tennis Channel has rights to more than 1,000 hours of tournaments.
