She was born Feb. 1, 1910, in Horton, the daughter of Justin B. and Alice (Lyons) Mapes. She graduated from Horton High School in 1928.
Mrs. Swartz was a homemaker and a certified nurse's aide at Tri-County Manor, Horton. She also was a housemother at Emporia State University. With her husband, she owned and operated Swartz Motor Company, Everest.
She was a member of Everest United Methodist Church, where she held several offices, United Methodist Women, Everest Historical Society and Farm Bureau Brown County Extension Club.
She married H. Frederick Swartz on Aug. 10, 1932, in Topeka. He died Aug. 13, 1967.
Survivors include a son, Donald Frederick Swartz, Castle Rock, Colo.; two daughters, Carolyn Madaus and Jane Clinton, both of Lawrence; three brothers, C.M. "Pete" Mapes, Horton, Warren "Dutch" Mapes, San Jose, Calif., and Donald F. Mapes, Springfield, Ill.; nine grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at Dishon-Maple-Chaney Mortuary, Horton.
