Trinity Respite Care is looking for volunteers for its "Time Out" program for parents of children with disabilities.
The program's volunteers provide care for the children while their parents take a much-needed break to shop, relax, visit friends or run errands, said Teresa Martell, executive director of Trinity Respite Care.
The program is offered from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. two Saturdays each month.
"We can take eight kids, ages birth to 8 years," Martell said.
Trinity Respite Care, which will celebrate its 25th anniversary next spring, has a simple mission: to reduce stress and help preserve families in Douglas County by providing respite and attendant care to individuals with disabilities of any age and to older adults.
Martell said the agency provided 66,145 hours of care to 449 clients last year. Trinity Respite Care has about 80 people helping to provide its services; all but six are part-time workers. Workers receive about four hours of training as well as CPR training.
"We use a lot of students," she said.
Martell said volunteers also are needed to go into the homes of elderly or disabled people to help with house cleaning and meal preparation.
Last week's results
Heather Hoy, program manager at Kansas University Continuing Education, said seven people came forward to volunteer for the "Langston Hughes Let America Be America Again" symposium after reading about it in last week's "How You Can Help."
However, an additional 40 or so volunteers are still needed for the symposium, which will be Feb. 7-10 on the KU campus.
Hoy said volunteers can help in a variety of ways, including greeting attendees, handing out packets of information, providing transportation for speakers, escorting speakers during the conference and helping exhibitors set up tables.
Ushers are needed for presentations by writer Alice Walker at 7 p.m. Jan. 31 and actor Danny Glover at 7 p.m. Feb. 7. Volunteers also are needed the week before the conference to help prepare materials and information packets.
Those interested can call Hoy at 864-3978.
