Perhaps your kids are grown and you miss buying the latest toy for them, or perhaps you want your children to appreciate giving as much as getting. If so, you can sign up with one of several Douglas County social service agencies to adopt a child or family this holiday season.
Here's a list of agencies needing help. Most agencies need two weeks to make arrangements so call now to offer your help.
Women's Transitional Care Services, a shelter for abused women and their children, is looking for women to adopt a mother and her children for Christmas. For a list of available families, call Meredith Norfolk, 843-3333.
Ballard Community Center, an agency that provides a range of services to low-income families and provides food, clothing and gifts to about 125 families during the holiday season, needs people to adopt a family or give money for those families who have registered but are not adopted. Community Drop In Center, which provides hot showers, referrals for services, coffee, lockers and a warm place to stay to the homeless, needs socks, gloves and other clothing items for those who spend a lot of time outdoors. Call Tami Clark, 832-8864.
The Salvation Army needs people to adopt a family or make donations to help low-income people. The church also needs volunteers to serve as bell ringers or to help people complete assistance forms. Contact Capt. Carolyn Schuetz, 843-4188.
KVC Behavioral Healthcare Network, formerly Kaw Valley Center, has 200 children to find gifts for this year and are looking for people to adopt one or more child. The center also needs coats, hats and gloves for all ages of children and teens, luggage and jeans for high school youths. Monetary donations also are accepted. Contact Megan Edmonds, 331-4200.
LINK, which provides meals to the needy, needs donations of food or money for holiday meals and volunteers to help serve meals at the meal site. Contact Terry Connolly, 865-3985.
ECKAN, which provides services to low-income families, also is looking for people to adopt a family or donate food or money for a Christmas basket. Contact Eve Cofer, 841-3357.
Pelathe Community Center, which serves low-income families, needs food to restock its pantry and donations to help clients have a better holiday. Call 841-7202.
