Leavenworth A prisoner cannot sue the federal penitentiary at Leavenworth for mishandling his personal property, an appeals court has ruled.
Timothy Hatten was transferred in 1995 from Leavenworth to a detention center in Miami that wouldn't accept his personal property. The items were returned to Leavenworth.
He returned to Leavenworth the next year, but before he could obtain his property, the prison implemented a new policy limiting the number of items he could own. The items were eventually mailed to Hatten's mother.
Hatten sued, but his case was rejected by the federal district court, which noted the prison has immunity in such matters. The appellate court agreed.
