Local officials praised the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission's ruling upholding an electric rate structure that allows Lawrence customers to pay less for energy than those in Wichita.

"It's good news," Douglas County Administrator Craig Weinaug said.

The city had contributed $10,000 to a legal defense of the rate structure. Douglas County gave an additional $5,000.

Northeast Kansas customers were promised they wouldn't have to pay for the construction costs of Wolf Creek nuclear power plant. FERC's ruling enforces the promise.

"I think they ruled, 'That's the deal and you can't go back on it now,'" City Manager Mike Wildgen said.

Mayor Mike Rundle agreed.

"It gives us good reason to have faith in the processes that mediate these controversies," he said. "It's good news for the ratepayers."
