Free State High will open the 2001 football season tonight against Shawnee Mission West, a team the Firebirds have had success against since opening in '97.

Kickoff for the Sunflower League contest is 7 p.m. at Haskell Stadium.

A taped replay of the FSHS-SM West game will be shown at 10:30 tonight on cable channel 6.

The Firebirds, 3-1 all time against the Vikings, have won three in a row against SM West. FSHS finished 2-7 last season, including a 21-14 decision over SM West in last year's opener. The Firebirds didn't win again until the season finale against Leavenworth.

The Vikings are also coming off a 2-7 season with victories over Shawnee Mission East and SM South.

Senior Chris Longino and junior Matt Berner are battling for Free State's No. 1 quarterback position. Both are expected to see action tonight.
