Molestation case nears plea agreement
A 60-year-old Lawrence man charged with molesting teen-age boys is negotiating a plea agreement with the Douglas County District Attorney's Office.
The suspect appeared Wednesday before District Judge Mike Malone. A preliminary hearing had been scheduled in cases alleging four counts of criminal sodomy and one count of indecent liberties with a child.
The suspect's attorney, David Brown, said his client would waive his right to a preliminary hearing and asked for a week to work on a plea agreement.
Malone set 10 a.m. Thursday for a hearing on a plea agreement.
The Journal-World does not publish the names of suspects in sex crimes unless they have been convicted.
The sodomy incidents allegedly occurred at various times from February 2000 to April 2001. The suspect was arrested on those charges in May, then released on $40,000 bond.
In June he was arrested again on the indecent liberties charge. His bond was set at $500,000, and he remains in the Douglas County Jail.

Computer bugs prompt Statehouse measures
Topeka A computer virus has recently attacked the computers of dozens of lawmakers, prompting legislative leaders Thursday to authorize the installation of anti-virus software.
The virus forced at least one lawmaker, Senate President Dave Kerr, R-Hutchinson, to have his computer professionally cleaned.
The virus replicates e-mail addresses in the affected computer and then floods it with e-mail, said Dave Larson, director of computer services for the Legislature.
The anti-virus effort will cost about $500, he said, and will scan e-mail for viruses but will not read the content.
