Lawrence, Douglas County and the Lawrence school district are making progress toward combining their purchasing power, officials said Wednesday.
The school district has different purchasing requirements than the other two governments, City Manager Mike Wildgen said, but officials are looking at joint purchase of everything from paper to long-distance phone service.
Joint financial efforts first came to the forefront last spring as a campaign proposal by failed school board candidate Kurt Thurmaier.
School Board President Sue Morgan said officials should eventually look at doing major building projects together. "I think we want to keep the capital improvement plan as our ultimate goal," she said.
