The enthusiasm and energy students bring with them to Lawrence each fall add much to the vitality of our community.

It isn't hard to tell when students start arriving in Lawrence for the fall semester.

Traffic picks up and gets a little more erratic. There are lines at every cash register and it's harder to get a table at many local restaurants.

But there's also a lot of excitement when students come back to Kansas University and Haskell Indian Nations University. It's an emotional time for many families, especially those with students who will be living away from home for the first time.

After years of living in one community, it is easy to forget the adrenaline rush of moving to a new city and starting a new adventure. It can be a little scary, and it helps to find a few patient, friendly people at your new home to ease the transition.

Being good hosts and dealing with a little inconvenience for a week or two each year is a small price to pay for the energy and vitality that university students and faculty bring to Lawrence.

So let's extend a hearty welcome to all of our university students. We thank you for choosing Lawrence as your home for the next few years and wish you well in your academic pursuits.
